Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens - better known to the public as Queen Latifah, is an American performer, actress, and singer. The role of Queen Latifah in television, film and in music has earned many prizes. They include the Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Additional Grammy Nominations Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot and Rita Owens, both police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher, who worked in Irvington High School. The couple divorced in the year Latifah was ten. Latifah was brought up in the Baptist church and she attended Catholic schools within Newark New Jersey. Her stage name Latifah which means delicate and kind in Arabic was bestowed to her by her cousin at the age of she was eight. Latifah is an extremely tall girl of 5'10 inches who played in the basketball team of her high school squad. At her school's game she performed "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah started beatboxing in the ladies fresh rap group. Latifah joined the Flavor Unit's first group that included a variety of MCs, as well as DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King recorded an example of the rap Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. He emailed the recorded to Yo! MTV Raps the Fab Five Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was enthralled by the track. It was signed by Latifah, and released her debut single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
